Background

Henry II of France was an intrepid King whose 16th-century reign, though brief, formed a historic turning point for France. The last of the truly effective members of the House of Valois to sit on the French throne, he left his mark on everything from the borders of Europe to the development of patent law. Pieces of his parade armor reside in the Louvre and Vienna’s Museum of Ethnology, and a full set along with the famous Shield of Henry II of France is on display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

The stacker’s obverse side features a rendition of the original artwork from the museum-displayed Shield of Henry II de France. A representation of the Battle of Cannae, thought to represent a parallel to France’s struggles against the Holy Roman Empire, is at the centre, surrounded by complicated motifs and symbolism associated with the King and the office of the monarchy. The reverse side is blank save for a reverse impression of the images on the main face, making the round easily stackable.
