The Historic 1965 Queen Elizabeth II Effigy

The obverse reproduces the second portrait of Queen Elizabeth II used on Canadian coinage.

Designed by British sculptor and artist Arnold Machin, the portrait was introduced on Canadian coins in 1965, when Queen Elizabeth II was 39 years old.

The Queen is depicted wearing a jeweled tiara and elaborate gown, surrounded by the inscription:

ELIZABETH II D. G. REGINA

The Latin legend identifies Elizabeth II as Queen “by the Grace of God.” https://www.mint.ca/en

This historic portrait remained associated with Canadian circulating coinage for decades and provides a dramatic contrast to the later portraits of the Queen represented by the other coins in the RCM series.

More Than a Quarter Ounce of Gold

Although its intrinsic value is supported by approximately one-quarter troy ounce of .9999 fine gold, this coin should not be valued solely according to melt.

Its 1,500-coin mintage, Reverse Proof finish, historic Arnold Machin portrait, original RCM presentation and position within a four-coin collector series all contribute to its numismatic character.

For collectors of Royal Canadian Mint gold, Queen Elizabeth II coinage, Canadian maple leaf designs and low-mintage modern gold issues, the 2015 Canada Maple Leaves 1965 Queen Effigy Reverse Proof Gold Coin represents a particularly distinctive Canadian release.
